Hello and welcome to Digital Minute, this week we’ll be taking a closer look at the growing Google ranking signal - HTTPS.

Back in August 2014 Google announced that it will be starting to use HTTPS as a ranking signal, all be it at a relatively low level with it only affecting 1% of results.

Fast forward to June 2016 and data suggests that around 32% of page 1 google results now use a HTTPS protocol – and the trend appears to be growing.

HTTPS adds an additional layer of security to your website by encrypting in SSL and then sharing a key with the server.

Essentially HTTPS makes your site increasingly difficult to hack and in certain search markets, that could be a key signal for search engines of trust and authority.

If this trend continues to grow at the pace it has done so far, it is something that brands really need to think about – if they haven’t already.

One thing that we’ll certainly keep our eye on is the adoption rate, as we may see another HTTPS-related algorithm update in the next 6-12 months.

We’ve spent time crunching the data on just how much influence HTTPS appears to be having, and you’ll find that analysis over on our blog.

Thanks for watching, I’m Steve Chambers and that was your digital minute.
