Hello and welcome to Digital Minute, this week we’re discussing Google’s latest mobile search announcement.
Back in September 2015 Google declared that it was experimenting with a mobile only index in order to address a number of ranking signal issues for mobile.
One year on and a recent announcement from the search giant discussing a full split seems to suggest we could see an official launch sometime in 2017.
The search engine already favours sites that work well on mobile devices over ones that don’t, considering factors such as text size and link accessibility.
Having recently dropped its “mobile-friendly” tag, Google are clearly looking to take this a step further; intensifying the pressure on brands to improve mobile experience through accelerated page speed and responsive designs.
The update would allow Google to run its ranking algorithm across pure mobile content, over the current method of extracting desktop data to fathom mobile rankings.
Initial reports suggest that the mobile index may become the primary index used for SERPs with a separate, lesser up-to-date’ desktop version.
