Twitter has announced that it is relaxing its long-standing 140 character limit, in a move which it claims will give both users and brands more space to “express themselves”.

When the changes go live, at some point in the coming months (Twitter has been fairly non-committal on a date), Twitter handles and media attachments, such as polls, videos, gifs and photos, will no longer count towards the 140 character limit.

The intention is to prevent some of the more functional elements of Twitter, such as handles and links, from influencing the creative in a tweet.

Hello and welcome to Digital Minute. This week we’re looking at the big changes that are coming to Twitter.

The social giant will be celebrating its 10th birthday this year and throughout that time we’ve seen many changes and new features, including ‘First View’ and ‘Moments’.

Twitter’s latest announcement is that it is relaxing its long-standing 140 character limit, giving it users and brands more space to “express themselves”.

When the changes go live, Twitter handles and media attachments, such as polls, videos, gifs and photos, will no longer count towards the 140 character limit.

Other introductions include the ability for you to ‘Retweet’ and even ‘Quote Tweet’ your own account.

It means that users can publish more content, and it could even make customer service on social media that little bit easier. However, you will still have to wait a little while to get your hands on these new features, with the roll out planned for a few months’ time.

As always, there’s more info over on the blog, and our ‘Driving ROI from Social’ whitepaper is also worth a read.
Thanks for watching, I’m Vincent Krasauskas and that was your Digital Minute.
